i’m trying to get my layout back together, but i was wondering something. i enjoy running the classic locomotives, and therefore i want a steamer for my collection. my question is this:
is there an existing HO scale Southern Pacific Daylight in plastic and not brass? i LOVE this locomotive and i would love to be able to run it on my layout. i prefer plastic to brass because they cost less, though i’m sure the Daylight is still expensive. but does one exist? i cant find it online anywhere
Bachmann made them, but it seems that they are focusing on producing the DCC with sound version and the lower end product will be discontinued at Walthers. Click on the highlighted Bachmann.
The retail price is $114, or less at other dealers.
Bachmann drives in the past have So-so, however after two try’s, they are talking about an improved chassis (3rd time is the charm?) and raising the price accordingly.
Having had 2, I would get one at the current price with the intent of adding the Bowser drive; - or you can wait and take your chances. You might like the current drive. It’s cheaper.
NOTE: the ‘War Baby’ is how they were painted after Daylight service. It’s the Same GS-4 engine (Not a GS-6).
wow thanks guys. i appreciate it. i dont need exact matching passenger cars, just any car that would match the locomotive. or i could just run it with freight cars
The Daylight engines in Daylight colors were used to pull the Overnight special freight cars between LA and San Francisco. The trains was short in length, about ten cars or so, and some pictures exist of them.
The Overnight cars were available at one time, but who knows today if you could find any.
I have a Bachmann Spectrum Daylight DCC Ready (jumpered for DC). I will be adding DCC and Sound later. My LHS had it for $114 about 8 mo. ago. You should be able to find one online without a problem and even cheaper than I paid. Make sure you get the Spectrum line, these are much better than the standard line in quality/reliability/detail.
Oops![banghead][banghead] Sorry guys, I got confused with my Spectrum N&W #611. My SP Daylight is a Bachmann Plus. I think the Plus was a preview of the Spectrum as it appears to be a better engine than the standard Bachmann engines and has very good detail. My SP Daylight runs as good as my Spectrum N&W #611.
you might want to check out a train show to purchase one…the last show i went to had a GS-4 and 8 various daylight cars for $145.00…that’s a deal!..I run the daylight cars but designate the train the “Sunset” which ran east of L.A. to Houston (there are two silver bud cars in th emix…prototype for the later trains ) and run them with the later PA/PB/PA -1’s. (well i will as soon as i get the locos painted and decaled)…chuck
well the price is steep, but it looks like you got quite a bang for your buck. i wish i had that kind of money though. i would have paid that price. it does sound like a good deal, but the daylight looks good running freight too. as seen in Stan Roy’s layout in “The Great Toy Train Layouts of America”. he runs his with freight cars, only his is Lionel O-gauge. i dunno though, i’m gonna keep my eye on that locomotive so that when i get the money one day, i’ll buy it and its matching cars
BEWARE of Bachmann GS-4’s from EBay. How do you know what you are getting?
You can get the new (current) one for $US 70 from Trainworld and the Bowser drive for about another $70. The older drive was a ‘dog’. The War Baby’ paint scheme is a beaut, and pulled freight and commuter traffic.
The best ‘plastic’ cars were offered by ConCor. Metal wheels, plus the colors were right. They are sold out. Athearn’s 72’ should be avail.
