I am going to have a grocery warehouse on my VA town in 1984. I only found a few Athearn 50’ reefers with possible reporting marks–FGE and NYC. Who else makes suitable reefers to have on the layout and what are realistic reporting marks?
TIA!

Depends on era.
Mechanical Reefers?: Athearn (add roof exhaust pipe).
“Suitable”? check out decals. What is ‘suitable’ for one is not necessarily ‘suitable’ for another.
By that time, older ice bunker reefers would no longer be in service. You can tell these by the roof hatches, and also the roofwalks which would have been on transition-era cars. Most of these are 38 or 40 foot cars, too.
UPFE, SPFE, ARMN, ARHN. BNFE might have still been in service. FGE.
Almost all would have been in 57’ mechanical reefers. Maybe a few CRYX cryogenic reefers.

I have some Athearn 57 foot reefer kits. Among the roadnames are BRMX, Santa Fe and RMDX. Built dates are all 71 and 72 so they should fit your era. I’m sure they made other roadnames.
Check www.Athearn.com and then go to either the kits section or the Ready to Roll section. In both locations there is a Referigerator car section. Hit the 57 foot mechanical listing and the road names available along with a photo will come up.
Add teh exhaust stack to the car when putting them in service.
