Attention Walmart shoppers. Walmart now carries 1/87 scale automobiles for $2.00 each in models from the 1950s up to modern times. These are not the Hot Wheels or Match Box size cars, but actual HO scale cars. I forget the brand, but each vehicle comes in it’s own individual plastic display case and looks just as good as the $10.00 Walthers models…
A friend of mine discovered them last night and bought an entire box full.
I apologize if someone else has already brought this up.
a lot of them are too classic for me. i have the BMW 3-series and a 69 camaro, to add in a classic. i need more “generic” cars.
but these are a good find. anyone doing the 60’s is in luck.

Wal-Mart is great for offering cars that cost $10-20 each at the hobby shops for only $2 each. I like that. I have purchased about 15 of them myself. I purchased mainly all the new ones since I model modern and one or two of the older cars from the 70’s. I hope that they get more styles thru the coming months too so I can buy more at such a reasonable price.
These were available at on time u.nder the MINI EXACTS line as Istill have one of the origanal 63 Corvette Stingray split window coupe models. Glad to see there back
COOL find eh ? I found them before Christmas and they are a hit with my wife, also
Catterpillar brand has three construction pieces, bulldozer, steam shovel and a backhoe through Kmart, about $ 5-9 each, maybe higher. Also Athearn released a John Deere train set at Christmas which I added to my already growing layout equipment. It went for $75 before Christmas and $ 55 after ( of course ##!!) hey what the heck it looks really neat and the quality is very good. It could be called a "starter set " but it goes well with my likes and I like anything that runs on HO track
I’d laugh if Walmart got the message and started selling all kinds of model railroading items and supplies. I’d rather buy theirs for one fifth the price of Walthers…
I’ve said it before and I will say it again: these are remainders being dumped through Wal-Mart. They are made by High Speed, a Chinese diecast manufacturer which formerly was contracted to supply the HO models for the Model Power Mini series. Model Power fired High Speed for breach of contract last spring.
These same models are also sold in Europe under a variety of labels includng Schuco Edition 1:87. In fact, in Europe, these same models can now be found in blister packs for less than the Wal-Mart price.
Basically, what you’re seeing is the result of the tooling having been amortized. The factory is now just pumpin’ out the pot metal.
While you can see some new colors as the various Wal-Marts restock, what you are not likely to see is very many new cars. In essence, what you see is all they’ve got. High Speed is primarily a contract manufacturer, dependent on orders from companies like Schuco and Model Power to develop new models. They really aren’t making enough from the Wal-Mart sales to have much money to devote to new models and it’s worth noting the various GM models have now disappeared from the company’s catalog (High Speed ran afoul of GM licensing restrictions).
BTW: The '55 Chevrolets would not be prototypical for an open auto rack load. They predated the introduction of that type of rolling stock by several years.
A new Walmart opened in my area and I knew about these cars since before Christmas. I bought 6 cars while I was there on openning day. When I went back next day with my wife all three trays were gone. Must be another MRR.
Been there, bought those, posted this myself 3 times already.
I bought 30 of them @$1.67 each. I’m going to make a Classic car dealership on my layout with them. (I love the VW bus with the roof windows!!!)[:D][:D]
Cheap is GOOD!
I bought a bunch of these before Christmas. Then when my kids were looking for an inexpensive gift for me for Christmas I pointed them in this direction. Got a few more and some John Deere tractors for Christmas[:D] The price was right and they are nicely done for less than $2/each
