I have two Life Like P2K SD45s in the CB&Q cascade green “hockey stick” pre-merger livery. I also found a Red Caboose coil car in cascade green livery with CB&Q reporting marks.
I was wondering, are there any other locomotives or rolling stock in CB&Q transition livery or ex-GN/NP/SP&S patch liveries?
Not much out there. A few years back Roundhouse/MDC, IIRC, had a kit of a boxcar in the pre-merger green. This may still be available from Horizon. If not, look for it on eBay or at local swaps, where I’ve seen 'em.
I thought Railway Classics (brass) had a Burlington NE-12 caboose/waycar for CB&Q in pre-merger green, but I was unable to find it on their website. As an aside, they have a couple in Burlington MOW orange.
Can’t think of any others but I suppose you could take appropriate era, early BN cars, remove BN text and logos, if applicable, and reletter them for the 'Q. I’m thinking a BN flat car I saw at the LHS would be a good candidate as you could just remove the “Northern” from the side, and substitute CB&Q on the reporting marks.
BTW, The only other locomotive the CB&Q had delivered in the pre-merger, hockey stick paint scheme was the G.E., U23-C’s, but no models are as yet available (but I’ve got my fingers crossed!)
As for the ex-GN/NP/SP&S stuff, I don’t know but I don’t think so. You could try asking on the CB&Q Yahoo List at:
Though I model the modern era (my CB&Q stuff is more to collect than run), I always thought it’d be fun to model the merger era to have the rainbow fleet of NP, GN, CB&Q, and SP&S running about. Most of the California Zephyr cars from Broadway that I’ve pre-ordered are CB&Q just in case I ever do do that era.
For your information, all 3 of the other component BN roads (GN, NP and
SP&S) had equipment painted in ‘Cascade Green’ livery. GN experimented
with variations of the ‘hockey stick’ on certain passenger cars including
one Dome Lounge-the 1391 ‘Ocean View’, dome coach 1320 and several
others. I can’t find evidence of GN freight cars painted that way. The NP
had a series of International wide vision cabooses painted in Cascade
Green with yellow ends-the NP 10400 series. NP also had various freight
cars painted green. I can remember seeing 50’ flats, 40’ and 50’ boxcars
and occasionally 50’ gons all in green. SP&S’s last boxcar order was
delivered in green with yellow lettering and highlights-the 318100 series
of 50’ double-door boxcars by FMC. Check out the Fallen Flags website
www.fallen_flags.com (I think). You can find at least some of these cars
there. The GN passenger cars are in ‘GN Color Guide to Freight and
Passenger Equipment’ by David Hickcox, published by Morning Sun
Books. Hope this helps.
The CB&Q to delivery of one GP40 in the ‘pre-merger’ scheme, the U23C’s(9), and the SD45’s(30). Also, lot of older freight cars got repainted in Cascade Greed with just ‘Burlington’ lettering, space allowed for the ‘Northern’ to be added later.
The GN did a lot of repainting of passenger cars in a experimental version of the ‘hockey stick’ scheme, and the NP took delivery of cabooses in ‘Cascade Green’ with yellow ‘racing stripes’. They also repainted box cars in the full NP paint scheme/lettering, just used Cascade Green rather than oxide…
The first 2 units to get the ‘full’ BN paint job on merger day were a pair of E8’s(9942/9943) that were on the point of #25 out of Chicago, IIRC.
I am not sure who makes it but I have seen an NP hopper in HO scale in Cascade Green and I’ve seen (I think Atlas) has an NP caboose in Cascade Green. I never realized that these were merger schemes as well. Very interesting.
As I posted before, one of these days I’m going to have to have a layout that takes place in that period. Thanks again to all my fellow NP, GN, and CB&Q fans. There were no finer railroads.
I have that car but it’s packed away. I think it’s an Intermountain but not sure. I don’t know about the Atlas caboose. I was only thinking about CB&Q stuff in the pre-merger green as I don’t know about the other merger partners color schemes.
Your idea of modeling post-merger so that you can combine all the various paint schemes is one I’ve toyed with possibly doing some day. This would also allow me to run motive power that CB&Q didn’t have.
Taking the idea a step further, if one were to bump the era up past May, 1971, you could also put together some “rainbow” Amtrak passenger trains. I’ve thought about possibly doing this someday as well.
I’ve been into trains since I was three years old but I had never heard of the Burlington, even though I grew up only a few blocks from the famed “Zephyr Pit” in Chicago. I finally ended up with a Burlington passenger train set Dad bought me when I was eight years old.
About 13 years ago when I got back into the hobby, I was trying to come up with an era, scale, locale, and railroad to model, without succumbing to what I felt were overdone, almost cliche model railroads I was seeing in the train mags. I decided at some point to go with Burlington as I know absolutely nothing about them, other than the name was on that passenger train I received so many years before. So far I haven’t been very disappointed with my choice and I’ve had a ball learning about a railroad I virtually never heard of!
Modeling the BN-post merger era is a great way to get several railroads for the price of one - it was definitely a time for “rainbow trains” LOL! While all the locos were all repainted into Cascade Green by 1974 if I’m not mistaken, it took a lot longer for the rolling stock. And while they’re becoming really quite rare, I still see the occasional GN or NP car still in original paint even now.
Yes I’ve thought it would be fun too to do an Amtrak 1971 layout though from the pictures I’ve seen, Amtrak was using a lot of UP rolling stock (at least west of Chicago) and that part I could do without.
