Ho scale cargo nets

Are there pre-made ones? Looking for ones like the ones used for loading and unloading ship cargo.

Thanks

Chris

I don’t know about “pre-made” but there generally lots of material for cargo netting to be had right in your kitchen, only their current cargo of potatoes, onions, and oranges will have to be used up or relocated to a different “cargo” container.

I’ve never seen any “hobby” material specifically for that purpose, but I’d look for a substitute at a fabric store. Tulle is probably going to look pretty good. I use it for chain-link fence, and it takes spray paint well if you can’t get “cargo net” color at your favorite fabric place.

I’ve got some landscape cover net which is about a 1 mm mesh, which would come out to a few inches in HO scale. It’s a much thicker material than tulle (pronounced tool ) and I use it for security mesh over windows in buildings “on the wrong side of the tracks” on my layout. It’s not particularly flexible, but it can be shaped approrpriately.

You might want to check out a sewing materials store (some sell a mesh like fabric like “bridal veil” material. They sell it by the yard, I think… I heard of a model RR’er that used that stuff to make a chain-link fence. 'Hope that works for you…

You might try a hobby shop that specializes in model ships.

While “researching” my earlier reply, I too thought immediately of model ships, specifically fishing vessels. So, I Googled “model fishnet.” Right. Lots of references to young ladies in fishnet stockings.

If you’re lucky enough to have one of those “models,” you might ask her if you could have the stockings when she’s done with them. On second thought…that’s going to sound really weird.

The mesh size would be about the same as chain link fencing so I would look at Walthers and others fences.

Much Thanks for the replies!! Chris - Looked at a bunch of “fishing/trawler” model boats and their netting looks like it will work - Now where do I find this stuff…Lots of fittings, hulls and stuff…

Make a trip to the lingerie dept of your local dept store. Fishnets. Think out of the box, M’boy…

No one cares what you buy, as long as you buy!

As an addendum: If you do use “fishnets” , you could try a trick to form the netting to your desired shape, EG: a bundle of LTL cargo coming out of a ship’s hold. Put a “former” into the net, 'paint 'it with glue, let it dry, and that may just do the trick. I know it does work with tissue paper tarps taking the rough shape of a load.
