I have a Santa Fe yard tower that I am modifying for a club layout and I would like to add a couple floodlights. I cannot find anything so far. I know NJ International has floodlight towers but I would like just the fixtures. I want to mount two floodlight fixtures at the level of the floor to flood the yard area. The tower will be labled for the club railroad. A couple figures and different lighting inside the viewing area are planned also.
Have you thought of using LEDs? They put out a lot of light for their size and are almost the right shape to start with. You should be able to come up with something if you look at the way others have made similar articles. I have made several ‘pole lights’ based upon the tutorial here:
You might find it useful. I intend to make some LED floodlights to illuminate my grain elevator. I’ll just enclose them in a plastic tube, wire them to the structure lights, and aim them.
Rather than traditional LEDs, you’ll probably be happier with SMT (Surface Mount) LEDs. They’re the “top hat” shaped ones that don’t have metal leads, but small squares on the back to solder wire to.
I’ve used them to simulate floods on the back of roll-of wreckers and fire engines. They look very similar to flood lights. One source for bright whites is here at:
I bought a set of 3 Model Power lighted street lights (HO) that where way too big for street lights. I cut off the lamp fixture part with the bulb for a yard spot light. They were about the right size for that.
