HO scale grain elevator (pic)

Good morning, thought you might like to see Cassidy Grain Co. I am building. It is modeled after the real Cassidy Grain Co. in Frederick, Okla. I am not finished with it yet, any comments are always welcome. Have a GREAT weekend. Mike

Nice start. It will have a great setting. So far so good, but it is SO NEAT. It may take you as long to weather it and tra***he grounds as it did to build it. I shoveled a lots of grain out of box cars into elevators like that and the piles of grain and empty lunch bags were everywhere.

cool mike. i live in north texas and frederick,ok doesnt ring a bell for me. where is it located?

Looks great! I agree with ARTHILL that it needs some clutter. I also like the hills in the background.

Frederick Okl. is located about 12 miles north of Red River on Highway 183.

oh ok mike doesnt seem to far from me then

Tom

VERY nice, Mike; I am planning on scratchbuilding Maxon Mills, a feedmill/grain elevator from a Kalmbach publication on building lineside structures. Nice scenery, too!

I like it.

But that rail OWWW! LOL.

If someone would tell me how to weather my rails I would certainly do it. Mike

Mike, check the MR book, How To Build Realistic Layouts. Joe Fugate laid it all out. If you’ve got the ballast down, just get a 00 brush and some Polly Scale Roof Brown and a lighter brown like DRGW Depot Brown or RR Tie Brown and paint the rails. Just paint the sides that show. Clean em up when you’re done and you’re good to go.

Good looking kit.
However, if you want to make it the star attraction on your layout try:

  • Removing the plastic base around the main building

  • Bring up dirt and/or turf around the bulding to make it look as if it was built from the ground up, not just sitting atop of it.

  • Spray the structure with “dull-Cote” to kill the shiny look.

  • And never be afraid to weather a building. Clean buildings tend to look toy-like

My 2 cents…
Bob.

Thank you Bob, I know that I will never be able to make my layout look even close to yours, (there GREAT) The structure here is not a plastic kit but a scratch built made from 1/4’’ plywood. And I have lowered the building into the gravel to make it look better. Thanks for your input. Mike

See if thrsr look better, I am still not quite finished.

I wish I had a grain elevator…um … I think it looks really nice. I do like how you weathered the bins on the elevator. I also like the brick building beside it.
