With atlas having trash cars and containers, plus I’ve seen older coal and wood chip gons hauling demo/construction waste (prototype); has anyone modeled a landfill, or destination for these cars?
Considering the size of a real landfill, it would be hard to model the complete thing. But I see that it could easily be done using foam panels stacked against the backdrop. Sounds interesting for folks doing modern era layouts.
An incinerator could be more compact and a little more interesting to model.
Enjoy

If I was going to model a landfill I would use a simple siding behind a hill with a fence and a gate that would suggest the landfill is behind the hill.
I model a version of the closed Fresh Kill land fill in Staten Island. Since Its closed (they are turning it into a park its just a big Grassy hill for now.
This is where all our garbage is taken. It is separated for recycling, IE; metal, green waste, plastic’s, drywall… Also our garbage trucks will pick up appliances, mattresses and just about any large items curbside. This cuts back on people of questionable character dumping their crap along the roadside or in a field or forest someplace.
This facility is cleared by truck’s, however their are similar facilities serviced by rail. If you look in the background of the photo you can see large wood chip piles at the sawmills. There is rail service along there and the Transfer station (indoor garbage dump) building can have rail service if needed.
Modeling a building similar to this one would be another industry to model that could include rail.

Brent,A Pikestuff building would be a good starting point for that building.
I would put the building along the backdrop and add a loading/unloading area for trash cars.
Why along the backdrop?
I could double the length of the building to make a larger industry.
This is a interesting topic…I never thought of garbage recycling plant…
Larry, I was also thinking this is an ideal “backdrop” industry. It would eat a lot of real estate as a full free standing building.[:)]
There is a rail transfer station near me which takes the trash from the trucks compacts it and puts it in orange containers for transport by CSX on flat cars to South Carolina for landfill. Atlas makes the orange cars in HO and N.
An incinerator would pobably easy to build. Start with a power plant (walthers) build an unloading area and there it is. It could also receive occasional transformers (trash to energy) and ship out ash.
You could build it next to a waste water treatment plant.[xx(]
