John’s Philosophy Friday question this week got me thinking about adding some details that I never thought of on my Ontario Northland based layout. The ONR regularly hauls snowmobiles and ATV’s up to Northern Ontario for people on hunting and fishing trips. Does anyone know of a good source for them?
I don’t know about the ATVs, but JL Innovative Design has a “Vintage Snowmobile” in their catalog. It looks like an old Bombardier Ski-doo Elan model. Depending on your timeframe, it might be too old.
For ATVs I have a couple Wiking ones, a 4 wheel & a 6 wheel ATV.
They come with a rubbery figure that looks like they can be removed.
The Walthers flyer that came today has an N scale snowmobile by Neal;s N-Gauging Trains. Would do on a distant hill, but not foreground.
There may be hope, but the vintage one seems to be the only one in HO at the moment.
Have fun,
Richard
I had always thought that everything in life was made in HO scale. I too have been looking for ATVs and dirt bikes with riders for my sand and gravel pit. Chad said in an earlier post Wiking makes the ATV. I will have to look at that.

Nah, there’s lots of gaps in HO - even during the '80s I was a bit envious of all the cool modern Japanese office & apartment buildings that were available in N scale but not HO.
Not sure if you should look that hard, depending on your planned usage. Looks like the Wiking 4-wheel ATV is a Utility ATV, not a Sports ATV (Honda examples). And that makes sense, as German manufacturers tend to like to make vehicles that can be also used by Emergency Services (Fire/Police/EMT and so on) or by the Military (explaining why we got, for example, the erst-while Roco 1977 Dodge P/U of all things) for the European collector market (which also likes sporty and luxury coupes and convertibles - cf. Top Gear).
While we’re talking about hard to find vehicles, I have been looking for a heavy duty forklift. Not one of those wimpy warehouse models, but one a real man can grunt over:
Or, failing in that, like this:
Anyone know of a model available in HO? I’m also considering a kitbash off of a Norscot loader, but I’d rather use a ready made one.
CTValleyRR: I have a Volvo endloader that came with a fork set, it may be a tad larger than the JD in your shot. I think it was Motor Art, I can put up a picture if you want.
PS: I’d like to see a Grove or Kalmar type like in your lower photo too…
The Wiking ATV is exactly what I’m looking for. Kind of expensive but I’m only needing 5 or 6 of them. The snowmobiles look a little old but I ordered up a couple just to see if I can maybe modify them. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
Thanks, Chad. It was the “loader” description that threw me. Silly me, but I’ve been searching for “forklift”.
Motorart’s item #13094; Volvo Loader L60E w/ Attachment in 1:87 scale.
It’s a little too modern for my layout, but I can probably fix that more easily than I can fake a set of forks.
