HO scale street markings?

I am about to complete a couple of areas with streets on my layout. I used the styrene sheet method described by Jor Furgate (Thanks Joe [:D] ) am very happy with the results. Now I am ready to apply markings, lines, and crossing ,markings. So how is this done? Street decals? spray templates? Hand painting? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

I, being of the unsteady pinstripe painting hand, prefer to mask-off with blue painters tape (to prevent unsightly tape residue) - fun around curves (hint - cut tape on glass or plastic with french curve first, and then lay along line) and then spray paint/airbrush.
Some people do have incredible brush painting skills and can lay a long, even line nice and straight (or smoothly following a curve).
Hmm, never tried markers guided along a straight edge - perhaps that may work (it has been suggested in several articles).

Bump, because as you may already have seen this topic is covered in the July 2005 Model Railroader article ‘Modeling modern highways’ (p48)
I bring this up solely 'cause the author Pelle Soeborg uses the method I mention of masking the stripes with pieces of tape (although then he brush paints the stripes as opposed to airbrushing them).
I like the coloration of his ashpalt roads (and have since the layout article last year), as they match what I see in the real world around my house.

I just read the article in the July issue and I like the way Pelle actually “lays out” where his roads are going. A very good idea to make certain that your road doesn’t “taper” in the distance, and makes for accurate placement of structures, etc.
Still a lot of detail work tho…

I really liked the Pelle’s article, and that’s the way I plan on doing it when i go to revamp my roads this summer(right now they’re all cardboard).

Great, I have not received my July issue yet, so it looks as if it is going to provide me with some very pertinent information. Thanks for the input folks.

I too am a Pelle fan, but am a long ways from the craftsmanship he is able to display! I was wondering about how he managed to free-hand the template for his highway markings which he makes out of flexible film e.g. arrows, etc. I came across a site that sells HO decals for these highway markings, which could be used as is or perhaps as masters for the kind of templates that Pelle uses to airbrush his highways with.

Markgro,

Way cool! Thanks for the link.

Excellent website!

A friend of mine is getting ready to paint the streets on his layout. Currently, the entire surface is “blue” (styrofoam). He can sure use this info.

NO! it was July of last year 2005

I know, I posted this in May of last year! Antonio has been dredging around in the depths of the forum again[:D]

Yep!

My friend, who we nicknamed “Junior”, (ex-Vietnam war vet) needed some info on realistic looking streets. Instead of explaining the details verbally, this thread with the above link will help him even better.

Antonio, how the heck do you find these old threads? I can’t get the search function on this forum to produce anything resembling a useful result. It is the one thing I hope inproves with the previously announced new forum software.

Junior, don’t forget to add the little details.

This PDF has some excellent info on pavement markings:

YEECHH!!! LOL, you’re a riot![:D][:o)][8D]

Simon, on the “Advanced” box, just write a “key word or words”" of the type of thread you’re looking for. Also, on the “Forum” choice under Model Railroader select “General Discussion.”
