I wonder if someone can tell me the name of the new Track Plan book from Kalmbach that has an HO Scale Utah Railway Soldier Summit track plan in it? I would like to order it as I cannot find it again at any of the Hobby Shops around the East side of Indy and do not remember which one it is.
I have a 16’x40’ room in the basement and I think it was a pretty close fit as far as shape goes.
I just got registered to read these forum letters so that is why this message is so late. I do not know where to find this track plan but I live here in Helper about 600 feet from the Utah RR main going up Spring Canyon. If there are any photos of Price Canyon you want for scenery purposes contact me and I will see what I can do.
I may take you up on the offer down the line as I am drawing up and N Scale layout to fit the 16’x40’ space and am going to look at the HO Scale Plan that Kalmbach has in the book Stein identified for me.
Is there much in the way of industries in Helper that could be served by rail spurs propane dealers, cement, etc?
The Utah Rwy. doesn’t actually go through Helper. It skirts along the western edge and then into Martin where the yard and engine house are. From there it goes north to the mouth of Price canyon to what was known as Royal I think. At that point it joins the former D&RGW main at Utah Railway Junction which is now unfortunately the UP. For the last several years even the Grande did not have any business/industrial switching at Helper. There was a coal loading facility at Castle Gate that the Utah did use/own but it has been torn down and the turnouts removed from the main. It has been out of service for about 6 years or so since the last mine fire at Willow Creek shut the mine down. The Utah loaded one 91 car unit train or so, five days a week for The Intermountain Power Project’s two 750 Megawatt power plants at Delta Utah. They had 3 trains, the 100’s, 200’s, and the 300’s. Almost always they were in consecutive order from 101 to 191 and so forth. I believe they are RD 5 cars, not positive. As for the Grande’s switching the only one I know of in Helper was at my fathers lumber yard. It was a siding at first, then a spur, then eventually disconnected about 1967 or so. I was too young to remember when. The Grande did have a spur that went across the Price River on a curving wood trestle that also crossed State Highway 6. The tracks proceded up Spring Canyon to a coal mine. That spur was also removed around 1964? One other thing I just remembered, the Grande also had a coal spur going to Kenilworth on the north east end of Helper but that was disconnected before I was born. The Utah now hauls coal from the Wildcat loadout at Consumers and the CV spur near Wellington. IPP, Nevada Power, and some export coal are their main customers.
