I know this is probably sacrilege but I got a Walther’s catalog today which of course, has a bunch of their left over LL slot cars.
Have any of you put up an HO raceway on your layout?
(Are these LL race sets any good for a kid to tool around on?)

Yes, but they are the old Aurora Model Motoring cars. They are still way too big but they are much to smaller and look much better than the bloated things they have out there today.
No, I purchased a set for my son several years ago. Could not keep it running. I think it finally went to the Good Will store. Today the bigger slot cars are so much better and easier for a kid to use. Not to mention their equivalent of DCC that lets 4-6 cars run on the same track and use passing tracks. I want a set!.
These Lifelike slot cars; are they like the old school ones (Tyco? of the 1970s) which were somewhat bigger than HO scale (looked more like Matchbox size; between S scale and OO [:D] scale). I’ll try to hunt some info down (as I am rather into HO scale vehicles this year), but I did have a Tyco [I think] race set, and one which included a HO track crossing so you could have the road/rail thing going on (just on a blank sheet of plywood, no permanent mounting for me back then)
my brother and i had the aurora ‘HO’ slot cars back in the 70’s with the railroad crossover , it was a lot of fun seeing of you could beat the train to the crossing . maybe even enough fun that it would interest your son . but do you have enough room on your (expanded) 4x8 for a slot car track ?
Slot car HO is a lot bigger than MRR HO, I don’t recall the scale of the slot cars, but the vehicles look about double the size of a real HO car.
We have a small LL set. The Fast trackers brand of cars have quite strong magnets and stick to the track like glue. They are relatively easy for a kid to drive without flying off the track too much.
Your son would love it
We had one when my son was young simple oval of train track , buildings set up and race track the train would go under
you can always set it up on the floor and race and put it away when you are finished
Rich
Locally the adults get together and race on a large track at a freinds house
They have sprint cars, nascar ,modifieds
Thanks. He got a real cheapy for Christmas. Much bigger than HO. We are planning to set it up semi permanently on this wooden Thomas layout.
