HO Spectrum Shay &Climax Which Decoder ?

Hi There;
See above. Thanx in advance for help.

This is what I put in my Shay. A new Tsunami might be a good choice as well?

Space in the Spectrum Shay is so limited that there’s no way a Tsunami decoder would fit – only the SoundTraxx decoder made specifically for it is small enough.

For a non-sound decoder, a TCS T-1 might be able to be squeezed into the Shay. I have no experience with the Climax, so I can’t answer your question about it .

I did not realize that the Tsunami was that big. What is interesting is that I have seen this description of the light steam version

Described as suitable for a Shay! I guess it might sound right, just not fit?

It won’t fit in HO. It will fit in S and O scale however…

HMMM [%-)][%-)] Will it Or won’t it? Actually I’m not so much interested in sound just want a decoder . cacole thanx for info on T1. I emailed them --waiting for a reply. They are a Canadian Co. so I don’t have to go through Customs. ( I live in B.C.)

it’s been a while since i had the HO spectrum shay apart so i’m guessing , but the tsunami is 1 11/16" long . the exterior of the shay tender is 1 7/8" . very tight since you do neem some space to run wires . you’d have to remove the bachmann board from the tender and hand wire everything to the decoder . you could use the same speaker setup as the original soundtraxx decoder , which is a small oval speaker in the fuel bunker . it wouldn’t be an easy conversion , you might even have to grind some metal off the shell to squeeze everything in

i’m sure it would fit real nice in the spectrum On30 shay though

Tom, TCS is headquartered in PA. I have used many of their regular decoders. The MC-2 is an excellent small decoder http://www.tcsdcc.com/decoder/mc2.html it would fit for sure! http://www.tcsdcc.com/decoderpics/b3.html http://www.tcsdcc.com/decoderpics/Bachman%20Climax/bachman_climax.htm

They have installation pictures for both the Shay and the Climax. Sorry, I kind of went off on the sound route since it was what I had just done!

tony’s is offering the On30 Shays and Climaxes with the Tsunami modified and installed. They are going to do the HO units next. Bottom line is if you want something bad enough, someone will find a way.
