Where can I get some patterns for Turnouts. I would like to make my own turnouts and have read extensively on the internet on how to do it but I cannot find any full size patterns. I would also like information on duel gage turnouts for HO/HOn3.
Gary,
I do not hand lay my turnouts so this may not apply.
I buy one of each size turnout that I will need. Then, I photocopy first one side (for LH) then turn it over and do it again fot the RH. I make several copies and keep a file.
Now, for hand laying, I would custom make a paper pattern to fit the desired location and copy them to use on the layout directly. Then lay the rails over and spike away. There is a Canadian company that supplies them but they are pricy.
Hope this helps,
BB
www.handlaidtrack.com has a limited number of turnout templates you can download for free. If you have the money and are interested in their products, it might be a good investment to buy some of their turnout jigs and tools.
Otherwise, if you can get your hands on a copy of “Trackwork and Lineside Detail” from Kalmbach Books, there’s a pretty detailed chapter in there about handlaying standard (i.e. not dual gage) turnouts. I think there’s only one drawing in there for a RH #6, but they give you all the dimensions and everything to make whatever size turnout you need.
