Dear CTT readers,
Harold H. “Hal” Carstens, president of Carstens Publications, Inc. (which publishes Railroad Model Craftsman and also Railfan & Railroad magazines) passed away yesterday. More information is at http://www.trains.com/ctt/default.aspx?c=ss&id=13
He was a noted railroad author and editor, past national president of the Train Collector’s Association, and a tireless advocate for the hobby. All of us at CTT and Kalmbach Publishing extend our condolences to the Carstens family at this difficult time.

I read his columns in Railfan & Railroad each month. I always learned something new.

A sad passing, well know train fan. I have RMC from waaaay back and several years of Railfan starting with issue #1.
I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr Casrstens at our NRHS chapter banquet this past winter. He was our key-note speaker, and had a wonderful dry wit. I was lucky to have him sign my softcover V & O Story.
I can’t say that I knew “Hal”, but from what I’ve read about him here and on the OGR forum, he must have been a great man. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
A loss for all who enjoy model railroading scale, tinplate or in between. I discovered he was an Armed Forces veteran back in the 1980’s and sent him a copy of one the books I had written on combat veterans. He was kind and in turn corresponded with me regarding his experiences.
A great writer, who will be missed…
I never met him personally, but have read RMC since back in the 50’s and almost feel like I do know him. His writing will be missed.
