Not to be a wet blanket , but advertising for specific companies is verboten! It encourages others companies to try to turn this forum into an advertising space and that would ruin the purpose of this forum.
It’s also unfair to companies that DO pay for advertising space and that support this forum.
I know it’s a great deal and you guys want to share, but please try to resist.
Thanks,

I guess there is a fine line between what is considered a commercial enterprise using the forum to generate business, and a forum member talking positively about a brand, product or company. If forum members are forbidden from mentioning companies and brands by name, then a very large percentage of the threads on this forum are “verboten”. The Wal-Mart $1.65 HO scale cars thread has been on for 3 weeks and has not been removed by the moderator. Likewise there are many hundreds of threads where members talk up (advertise, promote?) brands of locomotive, DCC systems etc. Numerous web vendors are mentioned on the forum every week. In this case, a few of us forum members discussed a great sale opportunity. I really don’t see how this is any different than a forum member saying that they think Digitrax is the best DCC maker.
Simon,
The Wal-mart sale thread was for unique vehicles that were hard to obtain any place else. But you are correct in that is was probably pushing the limits.
You can talk all you want about brands, both good and bad. It’s not the same as saying, “There’s a great sale on a common commodity this week at XYZ. Buy NOW!”
Nor is it the same as a member looking for a specific piece and another forum member replies back with a place of where to get it.
If you don’t believe how bad this can get, try visiting craigslist forums sometime. Or perhaps even the old use-net news groups. They are nothing but advertisements, and that unfortunately has ruined them.
Digital G, I think you are really splitting hairs here. The 1:87 cars at Wal-Mart are hardly unique hard to obtain vehicles. They have been marketed as Model Power Mini’s all year for about $3.00 and can be seen in LHS and train shows all over this fine land. The fact that there are trays of them sitting in Wal-Mart suggests a plentiful supply.
I agree that we do not want to let this place get to the point that companies like MTH try to use it as a mouth piece. If I were drawing the line, threads like this and the Wal-Mart would be OK, but overt corporate threads would not.
Somebody has moderator envy?
The Hobby Lobby sale is an annual event, maybe as interesting and anticipated among railroad modellers as the annual NMRA convention (if not more so).
Brett might be on to something.

lol any way i found good deals every year after christmas there.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to post anything here.
I would like to thank fwdguy. (Mark) for this post. I know that we all dont want to have a forum full of advertisements, On the other hand I just saved over 100$ of woodland scenics from “Hobby Lobby”. Sometimes you have to bend the rules in order to help the other guy out, which is what this forum is all about. [:D]
Anthony.
fwdguy,
Thanks for the heads up. I try to watch for this sale every year and almost missed it… had
it not been for your post, I would have. Dave
I think advice to MRRs that so and so have a good deal going is fine. What the moderator should keep an eye out for is personal opinions about this retailer or that retailer being a SOB or suchlike. Now that does get out of hand and cause forums to deteriorate into ugly events. Retailers themselves should not post about themselves though.
I was close to a Hobby Lobby on my way home yesterday but I couldn’t stop because I had to get home to watch my Huskers beat Michigan in the Alamo Bowl last night. Sorry for the off topic post but we haven’t had a lot to crow about the last few years so I had to take advantage where I could.
I want to thank fwdguy about the 1/2 sale. I didn’t know about it at all. Now I was able to wipe out my local store to get some much needed materials at big savings. I will also know to look for the sale next year after Christmas
Thanks.

Well, here is my take, and my thoughts why it wasnt removed.
I would agree that selling stuff on here can be a drag. As it could get out of control. I have seen on other boards in other hobbies. But then again, if a hobby store was HALF off sale, and someone didnt tell me 'cause they wanted to be political… and I missed it… I’d be [censored] off.
Thanks for the tip fwdguy.
