Looks like I am going to MI tomorrow. Did a forum search on Detroit area hobby shops and it looks like most, if not all of them are shut down. Is there anywhere worth going if I had an hour to kill?
Try Rainey Day Hobbies in Ferndale, just north of Detroit.
Located on the west side of Woodward Ave about one-quarter mile north of nine mile road.
Google Rainey Day Hobbies.
Also, P&D Hobby in Fraser on Grosbeck Hwy north of 13 Mile: http://pdhobbyshop.com/ northeast of Detroit proper.
Great Lakes Train and Hobby on Van Dyke, north of 19 Mile in Sterling Heights: https://www.greatlakeshobby.com/ Kind of straight north of the city
Merri-Seven Trains and Hobby on Merriman Road and 7 Mile in Livonia http://detroit.citysearch.com/profile/5192735/livonia_mi/merri_seven_trains_hobbies.html on the northwest side of town.
I’ve shopped at all of them. Depending on where in SE Michigan you are going might pick one over the other.

Thanks guys. Flying into DTW and then heading to Troy, so the Northern Subs, but may have some time later tomorrow afternoon?
Gotta love the software that keeps you from saying bad things! Great Lakes Train is on a highway that is named after that comedian who co-starred with Mary Tyler Moore on his TV show, and also starred in the movie Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews. Last name is starts “Van D…” and ends with “…yke”. I’d write his first name but the software might not like that either!

I visit Detroit area often to visit family members. We used to live in the area including Troy.
I usually stop at P&D and at Great Lakes Hobbies. P&D has been worthwhile because they have a good selection of detail parts and also a good selection of decals. I used to go to Joe’s in Farmington which was very good last time, but I’ve not done so in a few years.
Sadly, the Joe’s in Farmington closed in 2009. It was the last of the Joe’s Hobby Center stores.
Five Points Hobby in Redford
Nankin Hardware stores in Westland(?) on Ford Rd and also the Nankin Hobby shop in Farmington (?) 9 mile and Grand River (M-5).
Any particular scale? I don’t model O / Lionel but there is a place … Dave’s Mower? (or some kind of mower shop, don’t really know, I’ve never been there) for O scale/ Lionel stuff. Can anyone verify this?
I’m back having weathered the storms last night, a real humdinger swept through the area! Sadly my meetings went on much longer than I anticipated. Good for business but not for my desire to seek out a hobby shop. Looks like I’ll be back next month so hopefully the recommendations wont go to waste. Thanks for all the feedback.
