I have an older Hobbytown E7. Anyone had any expereince converting these to DCC? This locomotive could pull the bumper off a truck in DC. I have a feeling that it may be a bit of a current hog and therefore not work converting.
Thanks for the advice

Simon;
You can purchase decoders with ratings up to at least 5 amperes, far more than any HO locomotive can draw - so that is a non-issue.
What motor is in your model? You may want to change that first, especially if it is one where the burshes are not insulated from the chassis. You can go with a can motor such as Mashima, NWSL, etc or Bowser’s new DCC ready DC71 open frame motor.
This motor would work well:

in an E-unit, with a standard HO decoder such as a Digitrax DH123.
Thanks Nigel, I am not sure of the motor, so will have a look when I get home later in the week. Thanks for the link on the alternative motor.
