He learned that was a bad decision. By the way, this was at the UP yard.

He could have come out worse, and maybe a gondola-load of pipe is just a very bad traveling companion.
A now-deceased Tucson-based SP hogger told me he had a “free rider” get killed (30+ years ago) by a similar shifting pipe load.
Can somebody explain the statement:
“We had to coordinate with the individual thru the use of a siren asking the individual if we were closer or farther from the individual.”
How was the 'individual" communicating back? Or did he have the siren?
Scream once for yes, scream twice for no?
The video in the third link says he had a cell phone. He must be a high tech hobo.
The second paragraph in the article in the first link states that the man called for help on a cell phone. It brings a whole new meaning to, “Can you here me now?” [:-^]
So it seems that the unnamed individual climbed into the fron end of a gondola-style car that was loaded with a load of steel pipe. According to the story (the man was trapped in ‘the front end of the car’(?). He was trapped when the load apparently shifted (spontaneously?) and he then used his cell phone to call for help (911-?). So the response apparently consisted of HALF the Fresno F.D. and a number of other agencies (articles mention 50 people in the rescue party). The rescuers attacked the pipe with a 'blow torch (?), and hydraulic jacks (Jaws of Life(?)
Anyway, the man was extracted, and taken to the hospital with injuries to an arm, and his pelvis.
At least it sounds as if he will survive; although battered by his experience.
The remaining question is who pays for the whole party?
Normally, ambulance rides are charged to the victim. I would bet the Railroad bill is going to be a WHOPPER dollar- wise. Not to mention the gondola car load of pipe; that I am certain, took a beating during the rescue.[:^)]
[:^)] I wonder if that is the owner of the truck that is parked at Roanoke Hotel’s parking space??
Cannonball
Probably not. Too many cases brought by trespassers thrown out and upheld by appeals courts. The lawyers keep trying and they keep losing. UP is especially aggressive on those cases, so only the dumbest of the dumb and desperate members of the bar would take the case on contingent fee.

Folks,
Sorry to be a spoil-sport and all, but hobos are one of the items on Kalmbach’s specifically-prohibited list for conversation. It looks like this thread is pretty much played-out anyway. (Hint: Next time, don’t call him a hobo
