Hole in benchwork

I’m planning to have a inspection hole in my benchwork so I can reach everything when building. Can someone please tell me the technique involved? The benchwork is open grid 1 * 4. I will build a mountain that I want to take away sometimes, but I do not want the hole to be visible when the mountain is in place. Any suggestions how to do this?

Thanks in advance

Yep! Use foam for the mountain and it will have little weight to it. Basically you have to have an opening just bigger than the piece of foam and a lip for it to rest on. Think a door frame on its side and the way a door strikes the molding. It helps if the scenery around it is slightly rasied so the edges don’t show. Then you can lift it out by pushing up on it. You might want to put a couple of handles on the bottom so you can hang onto it as you raise it. The alternative method is to hinge it on one side. The problem you will have is where do you set it while you use the pop up?

another idea is to build up the terrain around the hole so the hole is not even visable from the front of the layout, then the hole could be left open and not mess with a pop up at all. You could just build up hilly scenery and/or use buildings to block the view of the hole
