Sorry about the irrelevant title[:D], but I was surprised when I saw this:

… a NS train this morning headed by an 8 (eight) engine lashup!

…can’t imagine that it was long enough to require that many engines, as I’ve never before seen more than four , so I presume they were just relocating a couple of them? (couldn’t wait around to count the cars).

So, I guess we can lash up as many toy train engines as we like and still be prototypical.

You haven’t seen DA CHIEFs layout then? How bout it CHIEF, show him those black beauties.

runtime - they will sometimes do this to move engines to another location that is need of more motive power. I’ve also seen the real boys moving multiple engines without any cars behind them.
