Will my layout look very stupid building home made stuff like bridgs or anything?[%-)][%-)]
HECK NO MAN!!! Some of the items on my railway are home made. For instance my mountains areas and, little log cabin is home made. It all came from nature ; or should I say it all came from the creek right around the corrner of my home. When my family or friends come over and look at my layout, I’ve always have gotten plesent coments on the items I “home made”.
Another note. . . in Flemington NJ, there is a place called Northlandz. It is a wonderful layout the guy who owns it did most of the work on it and most of his stuff is home made. His bridges are made and designed by him, and might I say that becides the trains the bridges are phonaminal!!! Really good stuff. I was inspired to construct some of my own things after I saw his layout. So don’t DOUGHT your work. I’m sure u’ll think of something.
Everything doesn’t have to come out of the box.
Many people make things from scratch for the Model RRs.
I started a few years ago making buildings out of one inch masking tape and cardboard, which I would then paint with craft paint the appropriate colors. They came out okay, and I’m now slowly replacing most of them with styrene. But for now, they pass fairly well.

Not if it a well done job that at least looks realistic or plausible.
OTOH, if you’re a member of the “It’s my layout, I can do what I want, there’s no ‘right or wrong’ way”, than go with popsicle sticks and bubble gum.
If you really can’t afford to buy a particular ‘kit’,or something that you really
want,or is not available on the market;by all means don’t hesitate to
‘scratchbuild’ it. It can be fun.[:)]
After all: “Modelrailroading Is Fun”!![:D]
Hi, I just joined today. About a year an a half ago while on a doctors visit, someone laid down a garden railroad magazine, and guess what, I got hooked and fell in love. I havent even finished laying all my track yet, but have started building all my houses, bridges tressels and am currently constructing a complete minning company. But is there any one that can tell me is there a website, magazine, club or anyone that I can discuss this with as far as getting help and information in this area? I believe this this part in paticular is going to be a real love affair.
Well, for starters, you found this ‘Forum’;there is one for “Garden Railways”
I’m not totally familiar with the ‘garden stuff’ but there are plenty of people
out here that will help you out.
Best of luck to you,and [#welcome] to the world of model railroading, and the ‘forums’
I’m sort of a “die hard” "O"Scale modeler, so don’t really venture into the ‘Garden’
as you will.
There is nothing ‘wrong’ with scratchbuilding, after all,how do you think that us
modelers got their plans? You build to fit the situation.
After all, they didn’t have a “Sears & Roebuck” catalog in the beginning.
If you needed it,you built it.
Only if you do a crappy job . . .[:O]
