One Honda committee member cited the “work ethic” of the Hoosiers.
An article in Greensburgs newspaper has the County planning commisioner saying that 80 percent of inbound and outbound traffic will be going by rail.
I’m hearing that most traffic will be using the line South to Cincinnati to interchange traffic with CSX and NS. Other traffic will be sent to interchange with CSX. I still say it’s to soon to tell what is going to happen as far as traffic patterns, but one thing for sure Honda does not want to be tied to one class 1 railroad.
Actually, there’s not much difference in the overall characteristics between the residents of small-town western Ohio and eastern Indiana . My entire extended family is from Jackson County, Indiana ( one county west of Greensburg), and I was raised in Fayette County, Ohio. There’s some basis for comparision here!
Most of the spin coming from “informed contacts” in the media reports here in Ohio cite the fact that Honda felt that bringing in 1400 $24.00-per-hour jobs into the area would only drive up overall wage rates in the heart of their supplier network and thereby serve to raise their ultimate labor costs.
From a purely logistical standpoint, the Fayette County site would have had the cost advantage (again, according to “informed sources” )
Personally, I’m of the opinion that Honda had no intention of placing the plant in Ohio unless Indiana completely fouled up their offer. Such a move would have placed something like 85% of their manufacturing and supply operations in a single state, which would NOT be a wise move under any circumstances.
Add to that the volatile condition of Ohio’s current political environment. Robert Taft, rightly or not, is widely regarded by both parties as Ohio’s worst governor since the Mark Hanna era {late 1800’s}. Taft himself has been convicted of ethics violations, and there are multiple bribery scandals unfolding within several state agencies at the moment (involving members of both parties, by the way ). Both candidates for the governor’s office this fall have staked out positions well away from the moderate ranks of their parties.
I wonder if Honda felt Ohio was too unstable to risk addition capital investment?
If you can drive from Anna, OH, to Greensburg, IN, in an hour in any type of vehicle, you’ve either been sanctioned a special case to violate all speed laws or that was part of the deal that, perhaps, hasn’t actually been put down on paper. There’s no way. Still, I’m sure trucks will be handling these engine shipments, I just don’t see it happening by rail.
