Honestly, heritage paint schemes do nothing for me

Does a black person have more personality than a Mexican? How about a Latino over a white person? That is what you are trying to argue. Its the inside that counts.

On a daily basis I see the same units in the same paint every day. To me, its nice to see the the same or similar models but in different paint now and then. IE: UP SD90 vs INRD SD90.

I don`t what is worse, a faceless retort that my Six year old is mature enough not to make or an apples to oranges comparison that is totally invalid.

Thats awesome. The paint makes it more fun for you. But it doesn’t give them personality.

Also im sure your 6 year old wouldnt be making a comparison involving races either.

Want real personality in a diesel? Three letters: R C L. (remote-controlled locomotive).

Nothing like having a locomotive talk back to you. And yes, they can develop an attitude. Not that I have ever yelled at locomotives… [:-^]

Holy smoke, I had no idea I was opening such a can of worms with my “paint can personality” comment! Sorry folks, I’ll go quietly…

I think all of this would be a moot point if most paint schemes did not go out of their way to be drab, like CSX and NS. Black versus grey? I can’t cite UP for having brand recognition and sticking with tradition but the BNSF scheme always seemed like a circus medley of greatest hits like the heritage fleet. I have the sense that since BNSF monkeyed around with variations at the onset, they weren’t exactly keen on it either. KCS really stands out as an eye popper whether it suits your taste or not. Even Conrail blue after a time seemed “colorful.” At the end of the steam era, I think it was Phil Hastings who said watching trains afterward in a post steam era would be as interesting as watching a conveyor belt. I for one would like to see the Amtrak scheme predominately bright red with white lettering and silver trucks…the current scheme is blah, variations of blah…a sort of pseudo grey. That might help.
