I have several horn hook uncoupling tracks (from many years ago). These are the kind that look like a road crossing. I’ve tried rolling some KD coupler cars across them and there was no problem. (I didn’t want to uncouple them, I just wanted to make sure they wouldn’t snag). I would like to use them as rerailers and was thinking or removing the spring loaded center (the part that uncoupled the horn hooks. Does anyone have any advice on the practicality, effectiveness or ideas on this. Mainly I wanted them to help in rerailing in hard to reach places.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Why not just buy new rerailer tracks without the uncouplers? I don’t imagine cutting the spring wire would hurt anything. Remember, you’re cutting metal, so don’t forget your safety glasses. I have a buddy who had to have a cornea transplant after a piece of flying metal got in his eye.
I agree with Marlon, particularly if the horn-hook uncoupler tracks are brass.
I’ve still got one of those around with an electromagnet used to lift up the horn-hook ramp. I used it because the fixed ones also activated the clamshell doors on my Mantua operating hopper cars. That was a mess a couple of times when the cars were loaded.
Marlon. I’m glad the Lord and your wife are with you. Thanks for the safety reminder.
Bruce - Thanks for the reminder about the brass.
I guess I just don’t like to throw anything away and try to find a use for everything.
I would like to hear more thoughts on the subject from others.
