horseshoe curve info

trying to set up a weekend trip to go check out the Horshoe Curve

where can I get info on the curve, area, & motels, etc…

thanks

Mike

I have been looking up info on that area too…I am planning a 5-day trip to that area at the end of August.

Here are some good sites I have found:

http://www.railroadcity.com/hc/index.php

…GFR: Check out the Tunnel Inn as mentioned in a website just above. It’s location is right at Allegheny Tunnel entrance at Gallitizin, Pa. Also it’s a short distance from there to Horeshoe Curve.

we figure on going for a weekend, hoping to get some great video

are there any discussion groups out there that could give some info on place to go…

you, sir, are so lucky to get to see it. is it still 3 tracks big? or did NS remove another track? man i would do a lot to get the chance of seeing some black beauties towing a huge manifest around that curve. take lots of pics and good luck!

…Still 3 tracks up and around the famous curve and not too far {up grade}, one will find 2 tunnels in use. One with 2 tracks and a single one…One tunnel is out of service but still open and visible {in Gallitizin}…

Believe it’s about 12 miles up grade from Altoona to the summit at roughly 1.8% grade but believe the grade rounding the curve is about 1.45% to compensate the friction of the curve.
