The downside of garden RR in SE VA can be seen and felt today. See below for the temps as of 8:00 this morning, in F (red) and C (orange). It feels like a freakin’ blast furnace out there!!! I sure hope my plastic ties don’t melt!! Looks like Tom and I are staying in the AC for a few days. That would be a good time to detail some rolling stock and upgrade a loco or two.

Thats about right H-wise, between around 60 to 70%. Not as bad as where you are but it still makes a difference when it gets over 90, I’ll take low humidity anyday… It cools off nice at night but the whole fabric of the house heats up during the day then stays warm into the night, so it never really cools down inside after sunset. the fan is the only relief.
I spent a week in Reno last August, it was 105°F and 10% humidity, in the mid afternoon full sun I walked 2 miles to the Auto museum and barely broke a sweat. Last night (in the dark) I changed my porch light bulb and had sweat coming out of every pour of my body. I looked at the RR, thought about all the stuff I wanted to do, and turned around and went back inside. Your right, the humidity makes the difference.
I’m very glad I bought the tank car kits from Heartland, they’ll give me something to do until the heat breaks next week. Now, where is that stupid UPS guy…
Yesterday was pretty miserable, but it’s not too bad in the shop with the door open and fan on. Let’s see, the pyrometer says 86. I’m not shoveling dirt, but I might after supper.
HEY JACK ! Its to hot to enjoy the pool with water temps at 86F. I tried to lay some small rocks for the RR but gave that up and decided to build some abutments for the bridge & hills. VSMITH ! The humidity there was very low last time I was at QUARTZ HILL to visit my daughter before she moved to FALLBROOK I won’t get in a commercial airplane so I drove across country twice just to experience #1 Wildfires, #2 earthquake(joshua? tree state park, 7.1 quake and train derailment) And#3 Santa anna winds(110degrees thought I was inside a giant hairdryer) the only disaster I didn’t experience was a land slide. All happened during the couple months I spent there in 1999. Don’t know if i want to visit again. Maybe? TOM
mtm1site: Come on now, sunny southern calif is such a nice place to be. I live about 20 minutes down the road from Fallbrook, in Oceanside. From my house the beach is a 20 minute drive, the mountains are about 45 mins, and the high desert is just over an hour. Around here if you do not like the current weather just get in the truck and drive to the weather you desire! The ground may move on occasion, we may try to burn ourselves yearly, but when a stom comes through we don’t have to worry about picking up our belongings from the next county.[;)]
You got me there ttrigg. I enjoyed myself while in Fallbrook. It is a beautiful place and hey! the avacodo( if spelled right) capitol of the world. My son inlaw worked in Oceanside and that was also beautiful. I guess I just had a run of bad luck while I visited there in 99. When I returned in 2001 it was a different story altogether.A little more interesting. But, on both trips to Ca. it never rained at all, for a total of 2 1/2 months. They tell me rain in southern Ca. is like a snow event over here. I live 2 minutes from the water and put up with a few storms, but, I don,t worry about,earthquakes,wildfires,scortching winds,mudslides,scorpions,very,very large spiders, sidewinders AND, oh by the way,Killer Bees. So I like to visit but enjoy returning home to a change of seasons and all the activities they create. TOM
A few storms?? You must be talking about the occasional hurricane(pronounced "Hairekin) like the one in 1792 that created Wihlouby Spit where all the millionairs live in their expensive condos that will be eventually washed out to sea in another hurricane, not if, when. I had to explain to a friend of mine from Kansas what the difference was between a hurricane and a tornado- I explained it like this:
A tornado is like me running up to you and cutting your arm with a knife, it hurts where I cut you, but otherwise you’re gonna be fine.
A hurricane is like me and a few friends beating on you with a base-ball bat for a few hours. Nothing to it either.[:D]
Seriously though, it drops down into the upper 50s at night so opening the windows is enough to keep it cool most of the day. We didn’t even install AC until we accumulated so much electronic gear that it started heating up the house. The AC still doesn’t come on until the mid-afternoon, if at all. If we get an afternoon shower coming off of the mountains we’re good to go all evening without it.
We might set a record for today if it hits 95. (but it’s a dry heat) [8D]

Not just hot, sticky wet humid as well and does not cool down much at night until around 3am. Just sitting in the shade makes you bust out in a full body sweat. Personaly I don’t see the difference between 97 and 110, either one is monkey a[censored]s boiling hot. Like wind chill, it’s 40 below but FEELS like 90 below, I mean, who’s going to notice?? If it makes you feel better, our heat index is 110, that is to say, it’s 97 but FEELS like 110. If you ask me, it FEELS like I’m staying indoors as much as possible these next few days, the grass and weeds can wait that long.
