Housatonic Railroad pushes passenger plan to regional planners

Convert F40PH like a FL9, plenty out there. Push pull like Amtrak does on the Hiawatha.

IF I remember correctly, Housatonic bad mouthed the tourist train a couple years ago, now they want passenger service again. Maybe BSR will use this opportunity to ‘get even’ with Housatonic (tongue in cheek).

Maybe they could pick up a couple of FL9s and put the third rail shoes back on. That might be their only option to get all the way into GCT as there are low spare factors for MNR and Amtrak P32s, and LIRR DM30s can’t get into Grand Central. I see a “change at Stamford” system coming.

Possibly with an engine change at Stamford. The New Haven used to do an engine change at New Haven in under 10 minutes.

If successful, the proposed service will be the first intercity passenger trains served by Grand Central Terminal since Amtrak consolidated its operations at Pennsylvania Station.

This is an interesting proposition. I hope it makes it. I’ve visited the Berkshire Scenic several times in Lenox, MA, and would hope there could be room for them on the tracks. They were running trips in Lenox before the Housatonic saw fit to think there was money to be made in Pittsfield. In Lenox, the Berkshire Scenic not only has the station, which is a small museum and gift shop, but a small yard and an active maintenance and restoration program for its unique engine and rolling stock collection. Very good people there.

Mr. Mine - The Trains comment session has always been unique (to me at least) in that there is a very long delay after your comments are entered before anything seems to happen. If you wait what seems like forever your comment will appear and we won’t have to read it four times.

It sounds to me like the railroad is looking for the taxpayers to upgrade their trackage under the guise of future pssenger service. If they were profitable, they wouldn’t be selling the trackage to the state.

2 million riders a year is thier estimate? thats almost 5500 a day . really?

Connect to Metro North at Danbury for commuter type service to GCT and vice-versa. This would provide ‘through’ service to and from Pittsfield. With a bit of additionsl planning, a connection to The Lakeshore Limited in Pittsfield could be an additional side perk on pne of the runs.

The 2 million riders per year estimate is just plain insane. This idea goes nowhere. Ever.
