A few months back we created, through pure democracy to mitigate a need, a forum on “Kit Bashing and Scratch building.” I think a forum for us to post infomation about our layouts would be a neat place.
I know I get enjoyment and a sense of pride when I read about peoples layouts in the forum. Vic, Ian, Bman, Marty and to many more too mention have wonderful layouts and projects that I am simply enthralled by. As success for you all is a success for me!
Would y’all take to such a forum. The Kit Bashing and Scratch building has been sucessful…coments please…
This sort of forum would be very difficult without a picture gallery to support it.You could write an essay trying to explain something whereas a simply picture would show you.

This proves that old chinese proverb, “A pictures is worth a thousand words (popular fortune cookie).”
I have read many posts on the matter and see why having photos on his site would be a hinderance. Photos would rapidly eat up server space and could not be monitored with any degree of success.
I will say that people like you and I would have no problem with our picture posts, but there is that percentage of the world’s population that just has to “foul things up.”
Capt. C.,
How about a thread like OLD DAD started. It could be a thread with links to layouts for people to see. That would not take up any space really. It would only need someone (like yourself) to keep it updated. What do ya’ think??? Later eh…Brian.
Hi all
For links you have to have a web site and I don’t.
So an easy way of posting pictures from my perspective is a must it could also be handy if there was a way of knocking up basic track plans and somewhere
to put those little gems that you only find out by actualy building a line.
A sort of usefull notes type ready referance thing that is easy to acsess without having to read all the messages too find that usefull piece of information.
thats [2c]
mind you all those messages usualy have something of value in them
regards John
I was going to answer this with one of my cryptic; why would anyone want to do this? but i must say, although I don’t have much interest in kit bashing, I’m more a watcher. But i have actually modified a carrige and im going to modify several more in the same way. This is to do with running power for internal lighting in those little old boxy LGB carriages that i have, so i guess this is nearly kit bashing etc. My main problem is my eyesight isn’t as good as it was and my fingers are not so nimble any more.
O.K. I’m going to say it. Would it really cost Kalmbach or GR that much to have a photo gallery? Really the subscription cost one would think could cover the photo gallery. Seeing that all or most of us who use this forum are subscribers wouldn’t it be given somthing back to the readers? or promoting the hobby which would invite more to suscribe in order to offset the cost. Personaly I would LOVE to see GR become a monthly magazine rather than bimonthly.
Lets revisit this issue. It would be great if we had a section where we posted our layout photos et al. Most of us have websites and photo hosts…I think the time is at hand.
I would like to see a section covering problems to do with layouts. I come across one minor problem after another and get great enjoyment out of solving these little glitches.
I am now back to working on the last 20 % of my area 3, i had to stop 5 months ago due to the usual very hot local summer. But its Autumn now and it is only getting up to about 27 to 28 every day so I can handle that.
My latest problem is this; for reasons of getting the most distance i can to allow a reasonable gradient, i have to run a track through a one sided cutting right next to a tunnel. ( remember Vampires Tunnel). what can i do to make this look realistic and would this occur in real life?
a) who “polices” the pictures that are uploaded? Chances are sooner or later some “smart cookie” will upload some garbage that has no business on a GRR site!
b) since there are so many free, or almost free, picture hosts out there, why should Kalmbach get into the hassle of that aspect? Isn’t it good enough that we get a no charge meeting place?
c) who will teach people to resize their pictures to a reasonable size in order to assure speedy page loading?
d) and who will take care of the Copyright questions? Are you going to put a copyright notice on every picture?
There’s a few more questions/reasons which make “let them look after their own pictures” a reasonable approach. Perhaps Rene will list some of the others.
BTW I don’t believe that “Internet Extras” are included when you buy GR, otherwise those who don’t care for the Internet and don’t use it would pay extra; for what?
The Forums are a courtesy extended by Kalmbach i.e. a gift! The old adage “You don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” applies here, too!
Of course this is strictly my own opinion.[;)][:)]
Matt it is part of the same section only further down the line and they will be on the same level approx, I’ll send you a photo when I get a bit further down the track.
It goes through vampires tunnel around a 1.1 m radius semi circle, around a palm tree and under the main double section line and curves around and now will run parallel with the tunnel. Then it will climb up over the track to the northern end of the viaduct.
I had to do this because of lack of room and trying to keep my gradients down to 4 %.
This is an American double dog bone in 7.2 m X 3.1 m . Plus running parallel and within I have a reversing loop and acces to are2 behind the pumphouse at ground level and also through a doublke decker tunnel back into are 2 but 250 mm elevated.
Wait ab it mate and i’ll get some photos to explain what i mean.
The photo that you see on all my postings is at the northern endo f vampires tunnel this is at the southern end.
BTW: I love the idea of a layout gallery. I keep rolling ideas in my head on what would work for my mess in my yard. 90% certain of what I want, just have to get out and do it. I’d love to see some more inspiring layouts.
