Once its paid for I bet it could be a lot cheaper to operate than ships. I have heard the price of goods in Hawaii is a lot higher than in the lower 48.
In the year 2765 or so?
How about a derailment in that LONG tunnel to Hawaii?! The flight to Honolulu was about 5 hours last time I took it…
5 x 450mph (avg jet speed) = 2,250 miles (give or take)
LONG TUNNEL!!!
No thanks.

…Deep, deep water and extreme length…Not in anyone’s lifetime that’s here now.
I think the Discovery Channel is working on a segment.
Somebody fell into the squeezin’s[}:)]
You would never be able to sell me on the scenery in order to take such a trip. But, then again, I have taken the train through Gary . . .
If they could figure out a way to make portions of it clear, and add lighting, it could be interesting.
Wait, I feel my claustrophobia kicking in…
“We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, and yellow submarine…we all…”
oh, wait, wrong decade…but I guess the 60s were pretty good for him, huh![8D]
I hope you didn’t place money on that bet. Current ocean shipping costs are $0.008 per ton/mile, rail $0.025 per ton/mile.

It would probably be significantly cheaper to run a tube on the bottom of the ocean as opposed to boring beneath it, especially since the “islands” of Hawai’i are volcanoes and I doubt you want to add extra holes.
I imagine these to be special pressurized trainsets possibly running on maglev shoes and not wheels. But, hey, at least there will be no grade crossings to worry about.
Tunnel ??? How about a bridge [:D]
How about a massive turntable?
How about white boxcars with shackles?
[(-D]
Think about it: which should come first, a tunnel from one island to another, or one to California?
And how many crew changes would such a trip require?
Obviously more than one track would be needed; separate tubes for each track, with ample crossovers to keep traffic flowing in the event of one of the aforementioned derailment.
Think of the possible names for stations: El Nino Bend, Tsunami Bend, Aloha Bend, Long Beach Bend…Other names are possible, but you might as well put the Bends down there, as you’ll come up with them anyway!
If the Stevens pass tunnel takes 1 hour to clear out the exhaust then imagine how long it would take to clear a tunnel across the Pacific. [;)]
If you will get the capital, I’ll help you find somebody to handle the procurements…

I kinda doubt there’ll be any diesel locomotives left when this is built.[:D]
