How are popularity stars awarded?

I just noticed today a new thread with no replies had five stars. What gives?

Click on the “Rate” box at the upper left-hand corner of the thread.

Above the icon to reply to a post there is a little icon with stars. That displays what users have rated the thread. Clicking on one of the stars there will rate that post.

You can rate a topic by clicking on the “Rate” box at the upper left hand corner of the thread.

LOL, I guess I should have refreshed the page to see if anyone responded first.

I see the “rate” function in a small box at upper right of the first post.

Me too. And as I move my cursor over the stars, they light up or dim, so if I click when one is lighted, that is the rating I end up giving a topic? Never used it before, not sure how useful it is.
