How big would a 1/4" 1/2" 3/4" diameter tree stump be in HO scale?
MIKE
.0029", .0058" & .0087"
Just divide it by 87.1:
*Slightly less than the thickness of a piece of computer paper
Tom
There is someone who makes real tree stumps. The are really 1/4 1/2 & 3/4". i FIGURE IN HO A 3/4" STUMP WOULD BE LIKE 40’ DIAMETER IN HO SCALE.
MIKE
Some very fine wire would work for that. Or did you mean the other way, ie, if it’s 1/4" actual, how large a stump would it represent? In that case, multiple by 87.5.
so a 1/4" dowel would be a tree stump 22" in diameter, and the 3/4 would be 66".
==Randy
If you’re talking about it’s actual size being 3/4" then it would be about five and a half feet in HO Scale.
Thanks Randy, that’s what I need. So a .750" stump would be 65’ 5/8" diameter.
mike
Okay, you then would multiply by 87.1:
Tom
Not 65 feet, 65 inches.
Man what’s sad is that I use to be a top CNC machinist. I used to design and machine helicopter parts and ejection seats for Lockheed Martin. Man what happened to the mind.
You just slipped a digit, Mike. It happens - even at NASA. [:D]

Hey Mike
Buy a bottle of whole cloves, Don’t snatch one out of the kitchen. It can cause problems. [:-^]
PIck the little ball out of the bottom and glue that end down in place. The cloves appear to have large roots leading into the ground. IMHO they make great HO tree stumps. There are some I should have embeded a little deeper.
Have fun

This is why we needed to go metric years ago, plus we would have gotten the hang of decimal places by now…
Anyway, if the guy or gal selling the model tree stumps was smart, they would include an image of the stumps (clear large images, not 5th generation-scan micro-images like some retailers and manufactuers I know) posed alongside a fairly common HO figure - I propose the Preiser Truck Driver (leftmost figure - talk about micro-images) with the baseball cap posed getting something from his vest pocket, as that guy turns up on practically every modern-era HO layouts.
This way, since tree stump models (well, most any natural item) in general really don’t have to match an exact size, but just look reasonable enough, you could get an idea of whether they look right in scale to you.
for calculations I use the calculation:
measurement to HO scale: (.75 inch/12inch/foot) X 87.1 = 5.444 ft.
(or 1 inch in HO = approximately 7 feet 3 inches
For prtotype measurement to HO, say 40 ft
(40 ft/87.1) X 12 = 5.51 inches
Also, remember 1 foot in HO= (1 foot/87.1) X12inches/foot = 0.138 inch
So, if you want to know what something measures in HO scale feet from inches to HO scale feet, just divide the inches by 0.138 [5.51 inches / 0.138 = 40 feet HO (actually 39.927 feet HO, but close enough).
I hope I didn’t confuse you.

Man they look great. I’ll be trying that.
