I have read that some of the early LifeLike P2K ALCO PA’s had 3amp current draw upon start up. Did all of the PA’s have the problem? I know how to check this if I had the unit in hand, but is there a way of identifying these models by serial number or date of manufacture? I have an opportunity to buy one and will pass if it is likely to have the motor issue. If I were to get it and it had the problem, how hard is it to change the motor?
Motor change is pretty easy. It’s just a glorified Athearn mechanism, and the new and old motors are the same size. Wires are solderless. I don’t know any way to tell other than put a meter on it.

Loystoys has info on how to test the engine to tell if it has to old or the new motor. Scroll down the link page until you see the info on the PA model. Not sure if Lifelike is still replacing the motors or not though.
My HO PA, run of 1998 draws 1/2 amp at 15 volts. Almost 1/2 amp on my E7.
Newer models, P2K SD 45, approx 1/4.
