I am finally getting to install my Walther’s turntable and I am looking for some ideas on how to paint/weather it. It is being installed in a small engine terminal that is being used for both steam and diesel along with an enginehouse and some basic locomotive servicing. I am thinking the walls would be aged concrete, the floor either concrete or dirt with a rusty, well used pit rail. I know these places were pretty dirtywith minimal vegetation and trees.
All that said, how did you paint/weather/finish yours? Just looking for some ideas and maybe a picture or two would be great.
Since I am going to be sitting through the blizzard of 2011, no time like the present to get this done.
I used a sharp hobby blade to score my sidewall parallel to the lip at intervals, and then staggered invertvals in vertical lines to simulate blocks of concrete. Then, I simply made up a dark stain, a light weight, or light wash, and washed the walls. I also painted the area around the pivot plinth with dark paint and covered it with epoxy. It simulates oily water. Finally, although I didn’t do a very good job of it, I added rust stains running down the concrete pit wall below each rail end.
In addition to the usual such as india ink wash, dry brushing, etc. I used chalks around where the rollers go to show some level of built up grease/dirt
My simple turntable, not from Walthers but scratchbuilt, was weathered very little, with rust streaks from the rail ends the most noticeable. I’ll eventually add some grease and oil deposits on the pivot pad and along the ring rail, but it’s meant to look well-maintained.
Mine has a block wall and gravel pit floor. I added a little grass to the pit floor after I saw Doctor Wayne’s. The scene is not finished yet and just has a basic scenery coat to get rid of the ‘blue foam’ look. I chose silver for the handrails and side girders. No weathering yet.
One of the videos on RFDTV the other night had a 4-8-4 turniing on one with the pit half full of water. Don’t think that would work to well modeling, but you could definitely have a wet floor with some stuff floating around.
