This photo is from the new construction at Disney-Anaheim that will be called, Carsland. Nice looking rock work.
Me, I would have used plaster cloth over balsa wood. [:-^]

No way dude! If they used foam you wouldn’t need all of that support structure underneath. I have heard that it is difficult to find it in Califonia though, maybe that’s why? [;)]

i’m with you, Wayne. 'cept I’d use sculptamold. Disney is well known for being overblown & over the top! lol!! But, it’s Disney! Whuddaya gonna do? [:D] btw, I’m wanting to go there for the grand opening of carsland. Looks like it’s gonna be pretty cool to experience! (ps: notice the backhoe and other “tonnage” on top… no wonder…)
California has discovered that foam causes cancer (tests were done with rats consuming 29,000lb of foam per hour), and has outlawed its use as a result. They can now only use organic materials for construction. Eventually, they’ll discover that humanity causes cancer in humans, and outlaw human beings.
I wonder how sturdy a layout mountain would be if it used real-life construction methods such as the ones seen in the photo?

Andy Rooney said that all babies should be tattoed at birth: WARNING LIFE IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
Worder how much plaster cloth its takes to build that size mountain
That is pretty cool photo. I always wondered how Disney, and other amusement parks do that.
But I don’t think they got the color wash right. Maybe they should have went with Woodlands Scenics products! LOL
Carsland is suppose to open when the movie, Cars 2, is released. My nephew, a real Disney affecionado, will be one of the first to visit this new addition.
Hey, sculptamold might just work…[:)]

Motley,
I’ll send Disney a video from Woodland Scenics on weathering/coloring rocks. [swg]

I guess we’ve come a long way since the good old days of strips of cardboard covered by strips of newspaper soaks glue.
Let’s not kid ourselves. Disney makes mountains out of cold hard cash.

If I ever build my way out of the netherworld I’ll let you know.[:-^]
(My 3-dimensional steel stud underworld resembles that![8D])
Chuck (Modeling Central Japan in September, 1964)
I dunno.
That looks like a lot of hard work.
I would NOT use all that steel…it would weigh down my layout foam base over open grid woodwork SOMETHING FIERCE!
I prefer sculpted foam base with hydrocal rock formations over it, awash in cheap craft paints and cover with woodland Scenics ground cover porducts.
I would NOT use “cold hard cash” either…
But, Alas, sigh, I have INDEED, been known to contribute money to Disney’s fake mountains, and more than once in my life.
How do you all know that WE aren’t wrong and Disney right?
Maybe we SHOULD be making our mountains out of steel and concrete. At least, if we did, there would be no more “the cat is wrecking my layout” threads.
And no one would say that using 4x4 legs is overkill. [(-D]
Enjoy

I think John Allen did use some concrete over the natural earth under the GD. The real water river ran on it.
So true, The cost of that attraction would build an empire layout for every modeler here and then some.
The income from that attraction will keep a lot of people gainfully employed for years to come. Very few model railroads can say the same.
Galaxy, there is steel - and then there is steel stud construction. Steel studs aren’t heavy. Then there is the little detail that the foam goes on and around the steel, not under it. On my layout, the foam will (eventually) be the top layer, not the bottom layer.
Chuck (Modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - on framing that looks like an unfinished Disney mountain)
Ah, but, Chuck, it was a joke. I am sure those are Steel I beams used in the Disney version…weighing in at tons of base construction…NOT just steel studs.
And TONS of steel I beam…just one alone would smash my foam over open frame wood grid layout like Tim Taylor’s Chevy Nomad got smashed when he dropped a construction I beam on IT. { Home Improvement TV show with Tim Allen for those who don’t know.}
I furthered a joke about “cold hard cash”…as Silver Dollar construction could get very heavy also!!! {then again maybe I’d trade my Silver Dollars in for some Paper cash…}
Hmmm…maybe dollar bills dipped in plaster or hydrocal over a framework would make great mountains…now that paper one Dollars are not worth so much…

It’s quite probable, we could build an N scale foot-for-foot layout of the entire american rail system, including all equipment and the ENORMOUS building required to protect it. how much could you charge to see it? (just a thought- off topic…)[:)]
