How do I convert a video to a format suitable for posting? EDIT - problem solved

I have made a video of my recently completed 25 ton switcher but I’m having a difficult time figuring out how to post the video here.

I managed to get a version into Photobucket but apparently the forums don’t like the format I used because all I see when I paste the video is a grey box, and nothing shows when I submit the post.

I’m assuming I have to go back to the original video and change the format. How do I do that?

Thanks

Dave

I believe the Photobucket video format is not compatible with the forum software. The ones you see imbedded are usually from UTube.

I am not familiar with what video formats Photobucket accepts. This needs to be known. Video file formats are named pretty much for their file extension (the last 3 letters of file name [3 letters right of the period]).

You would need to know what they accept so that you dont convert your video into something they wont play. Thus, making your efforts worthless. Once you know what the site handles, you can convert to one.

You also need to know what “codecs” you have, and also, what your converter is capable of inputting, and outputting. Codecs are for a lack of better words, a translator. When a video is played, it requires a translator (of sorts) in order to understand the format of the video. Kinda like if you speak French and I dont, we arent gonna communicate. A codec in this case would be the “universal translator”.

Even though you uploaded your video, it may play on some peoples puters without the grey box as intended. You yourself, may not have the “codec” to play it on your puter. This doesnt happen as much as it did ten years ago. But i come across it alot doing HTML coding. (browser type/version can play a part in this as well).

Pretty much everything is moving to a standard like .mp4 (windows applications) or .mov (crApple applications). The ‘.mp4’ (pron: Emm Pea 4) and ‘.mov’ (pron: Dot Moooove) are the “file extensions” i mentioned above.

So, once you know what format Photobucket accepts, and your up to date on your codecs, browser, video player, if your file still doesnt play, then you can convert it. Always pays to double check.

Should you find you do need to convert, i recommend (disclaimer: by experience only, i have no affiliation with this software) “Converter Lite”. It is a free download, has alot of formats for music, video, pictures etc.

It is also super easy to use… click and drag file, select format to convert to, hit convert button. Its th

I broke down and actually posted my first video to Youtube. I’m becoming less of a dinosaur every day![(-D][(-D]

Thanks for your help but things didn’t go as hoped. I down loaded Converter Lite but my Norton anti-virus protection didn’t like it very much at all! When I tried to remove it I couldn’t get the uninstall to work. I ended up having to back date my computer.

I know all that crap is absolutely not your fault. Please don’t take me wrong.

Dave

I see that you’ve solved the problem, Dave, but to post a video to photobucket, it’s the same procedure as for a photo.
When you want to place it here, simply copy the img line of data and then paste it here.

Couldn’t be simpler. [;)]

Hi Wayne

I did manage to get a version of the video on to Photobucket, but unfortunately that version wouldn’t post on the forums. I think I did try to use the ‘img’ option but I’ll try that again next time. I tried to use a conversion program but it unleashed a whole bunch of nasty items when I down loaded it. Norton was not happy!

Anyhow, the video finally got posted via Youtube, but thanks for your help.

Dave

Dave, just post the link to the YouTube video.

If you have a Windows system, just use Windows Movie Maker to edit and to add captions and so forth. It’s free. Either already installed or a free download from Microsoft. And I’d suggest a different AV. Every time the release a new update to JMRI, there’s a ton of posts in the Yahoo group that there’s something wrong with the Sourceforge site for the downloads - always from people with Norton or another Symantec product. Too many false positives to be trustworthy.

Dave - I am very sorry that the ConverterLite program caused you so much trouble. Had I known Norton was on your puter, i woulda saved you the hassle and just said load your video on YouTube (hoping it was the right format for them atleast). More than likely I would recommend removing Norton.

It is my firm believe as a programmer that antivirus programs are just as detrimental to a computer as the viruses they protect you from. Worse in some cases. And i dont recommend using them. I reload/fix as many computers for people from antivirus program problems as i do from problems caused by viruses themselves. Thats no joke or exageration(sp).

I hope you get your video posted because i saw the thread with the still shots of the 25t switcher, and the model looks great! Very nice job!

Since the suggestion i made caused you problems, do feel free to contact me and i will help you anyway i can to get you back to where you were before the problem. If you have any other puter concerns, ask about those aswell. I am here to help.

In order to make amends for the trouble, if you send me your video, i will convert it for you, and send it back to you. Please use my email address (in my profile) instead of PM’s. Email works better than the MR PM system.

Again, very sorry this didnt work for you, and the trouble it caused.

Respectfully,

PM Railfan

Thanks for the offer to help. I did manage to get the video on to Youtube and from there into the post so all is good. That was my first post to Youtube and it went very smoothly. For a computer dinosaur that was a major accomplishment![:D]

I’m a little suprised to hear that you don’t think Norton is any good. I have been using it for years and I have never had a successful virus attack, so of course I’m inclined to think that it is doing its job properly. Apparently it is a little too defensive given what it did with ConverterLite. The one concern I have with the converter program is that once I got it past Norton it still didn’t work and I couldn’t uninstall it. Would Norton have had something to do with not being able to uninstall the program?

Thanks again!

Dave

" Apparently it is a little too defensive… "

This is what i meant by antivirus programs being just as bad as a virus. These programs have to get their fingers into every nook and cranny of your computer. They are resouce gobblers. They are performance hogs too. And more times than not - bad decision making software. By protective default, they arent always user/program/computer friendly.

But! In all fairness they have to be to remain vigilant. Problem is, it is a trade off. As you see, such a simple little program like CL gave your Norton fits. With anti virus programs, even normal operations a program might want to do are sometimes blocked. Whether its a virus, or you… writing to a disk for example is done using the same command instructions (the magic behind the scenes to you and I).

An anti virus program is like a security gaurd. He recognizes you and lets you write to disk. He doesnt recognize CL and sees it possibly trying to do something harmful. When indeed, this program is a well respected program.

That update that you pay for, for Norton is a list of “evil” programs that are known. Norton can also keep a “safe list” which CL should be on. If it isnt, then you as the user can manually add it. Wanna get complicated?? lololol

I find it much easier, and WAY less time consuming to be the vigilant security gaurd myself. And let my puter run like it should. Do i get viruses? Havent to this day. But then, i use a disposable computer for online so i lose nothing but a 15 minute wipe/reload of windows if i ever do. It takes longer than that to get Norton to accept and clear a program.

Thus why i dont recommend them… YOU can do it better!
