You have the cart before the horse a bit. You have to carve out the water course, seal it along its edges and banks with tape or putty, and then pour the “water” in a thin layer so that enough of it covers the surface you previously prepared by sealing it, and then paining it with flat black paint to make it look like deep water. Nearest the edges, or the banks, begin to lighten the black with dark green tones, then more earthy tones at the water gets nearest the shallows and the banks. You have to be patient and learn the blending technique so that it looks realistic. Once that looks good, and you are certain all possible escape routes for the liquid are sealed, and the surface to be covered is as level as humanly possible, then begin to pour in wide zig-zag from shore to shore starting at one end of the river or pond, and work you way along. DO NOT pour more than about 1/8" thickness for the first coat. If it doesn’t cover everything the first time, don’t sweat. Let it dry for at least 24 hours…resist the urge to poke it with a finger tip for the first 24 hours. Also, ahead of time, get some light foam board or something that won’t sag to place over it so that dust and insects, cats, don’t ruin the surface.
Once it is dry, check out your paint job. Adjust it or redo it over the first pour. Then do a second coat, again only 1/8", and wait the mandatory time. Keep going until you run out of patience, talent, water, or money.
Two pours should be all that is needed. More layers just add expense and the chance to screw it up.
thanks selector I will try it
