How do I install Micro trains couplers onto an N scale Atlas made Alco RS1 (pre 1998 release)?

Gentlemen and ladies, I have a question about the installation of MTL coupler conversion kit #001 32 070 for an Atlas Alco RS1 pre 1998 release, How would I install the couplers my tap and drill set isn’t here yet but I would like to seek some pre conversion knowledge just so I don’t mess up the deck of the loco. Thank you in advance, and there will be many more thanks.

You might increase your chance of getting a useful response by clarifying your subject more explicitly in your topic heading. Such as:

“MTL couplers on Atlas RS1 ?”

N scales know the MTL couplers usually refer to N scale. The question mark hints you have a question about this topic.

edited.

The MT coupler box fits on the frame and simply use a .0080(.0090?) screw to fasten the box on…Atlas sells these screws and you would be well advised to stock up on these screws as they come in mighty handy mounting couplers in the wee scale…

The screws that come with most MT couplers are to long for mounting couplers on locomotives and some freight cars-if you decide to body mount MT couplers on your older freight cars.

BTW…You really didn’t need to disassemble the locomotive from the frame since I found it better to leave the engine intact since the frame can break.I used a Bowser foam cradle( which turn out to be a excellent investment).I simply place the engine upside down in the cradle, remove the old couplers and install the MT coupler.

ok thank you, that’s what I was afraid of they looked a little long. just did some scouring for .0080 screws on Atlas’ Mrr site couldn’t find them was this a different atlas?

thank you again.

Here’s a link to Atlas store and the coupler screws.

They’re 30 cents a piece but,IMHO they’re well worth it.I usually bought 30 at a time and ordered through my local shop in order to save shipping…

well, someone give me a V8 so I can facepalm. thank you very much! you have saved me so much trouble.

apologies for the post bump but I completed the conversion Thank you so very much for all of the help with what coupler to get and with this thread on how to install the couplers.

here’s the finished product.
