How do I make cars engines and structures rusty

Hi I need to know how to make trains look realistic from todays rusty trains. What do you think I should do.

Sincerely

Ryan LaPlaca

Ger some rust colored railroad paint from your local hobby shop, along with grimy black and dirt colors. Put them on with what is known as the “dry brush” technique – dip the brush only lightly in the paint and rub off some of it onto a paper towel or newspaper before you touch the bru***o the model. Make several brush strokes until it gets to the shade you want.

You can use paint or pastel chalks. Opinions differ on whether the chalk should be sealed with dullcote or some other spray. I use dullcote. If you want just hints of rust, then a rust colored orange will do but if you want to show heavy and aged rust, mix in some dark browns and even flat blacks. Only very new rust is orange. It darkens over time.

I’ve never used the chalks, but want to give it a try. Anybody have a comment on the Bragden (sp) weathering powders?
The other suggestions are all good ones…And think about making a wash with the paints.
I have also used Rust-All, but be careful using it over Dullcoat as it is an alcohol base, and it will lighten/whiten the Dullcoat.
