How do I open up my N guage Bachman 2-8-0 Spectrum Steam engine, which is SUPPOSED to be “DCC ready” and put DCC in it? How hard is this? I can solder, but I’m no expert on these tiny parts.
Hello pilot. Might I suggest that if you feel that you’re not mechanically skilled enough, you might want to take your “engine” ( 2-8-0 Consolidation) to a train shop and pay someone there a few bucks to install the board for you, or at least explain to you how it’s done.
Good luck to you.

As recommended above - this is one of those things, that if you have to ask, you need someone to show you how to do it - written explanation is not sufficient.
I did my 4-8-2 light mountain and it was tough. I search the web and found someone that posted complete instructions with pictures. I would not have been able to do it otherwise.
One other point, use a high quality decoder with BEMF. I didn’t and it is one of the roughest running locos I have.
Good luck and hope this helps.
Peter
Very, very carefully.
