How do I put a Kadee on a brass steam locomotive ?

I have a Samonghasa Powerhouse series 2-4-4-2,with cowcatchers on the pilot and tender.A Kadee #5 is too short plus the cowcatcher gets in the way of the trip pin.Would a long shank like a 26 or 36 work? It is drilled for a coupler box. Thanks for any advice. Joe G.

Hi Joe;

This is why Kadee offers kits with one of each kind of coupler in them. Get a Kadee #13 kit, and see what fits. http://www.kadee.com/htmbord/page54.htm

You might not want a number 5 on the pilot anyway. It is important that metal couplers like #5s be insulated so as to avoid shorts (such as could happen if an other engine ws coupled up front). So few metal frames are used today in freight cars that this is less of a concern than it used to be, and of course Kadee now makes some couplers with plastic shanks
