I had a little accident and broke the pilots off my CSX SD-40-2 (6-31760). The schematic I download from the Lionel Web site don’t match my locomotive. Where do I get accurate schematic for this engine so I can remove the trucks and make a repair? Any one have a good description of have a good description of how to remove the trucks on a CSX SD-40-2? And while I asking, what’s the trick to removing the shell? It just doesn’t seem possible given the screws are under the trucks.
Looked up the owner’s manual on Lionel website, seemed kinda odd that they didn’t show the screws to hold the shell on and they say to take it to a repair center for a “bulb” change. [banghead]
Normally there is only one screw that holds the motor and truck together as a unit, however you do need to have the shell off to seperate the two. As was said previously the sideframes will come easily so maybe that will help with access to the screws.
The secret was the truck sides. I had to remove all four truck sides in order to get access to the six screws that attach to the shell. Once the truck sides were removed, with 2 screws each, the shell came lose. That’s 12 screws to loosen the shell. Then I had to disconnect the connectors to the front and back lights. After that, four screws are used to attach each truck. After loosening the screws, I then had to disconnect the coupler cable. Now that I have the trucks bodies loose, I am trying to epoxy the pilots back on. First try on both trucks failed. Second try seemed to take. Haven’t reassembled yet, but when I do, I’ll post another update. Thanks.
