How Do I Repair A New Lionel all-metal Log dump Car?

Well, my fifteen month old daughter became a model RR enthusiast when she decided to help our sons play with their set. [banghead]She was very helpful in removing loose parts from the log dump car. It is a new car that is all-metal. She pulled out two of the stakes that hold the logs on the flatcar. The stakes were the fixed stakes on the non-tilting side of the car. Anybody have any suggestions on a good way or tool to spread the bases of the stakes open (to secure them to the flatbed) after I reinsert them?

(light) hammer would probably be your best bet, after you bend the pins or whatever close to the “right” way, just tap them a couple of times with the hammer to hold them in place.

although you MIGHT need to solder them or somethingso they don’t fall right back out.

(LAUGHING) Hmmm, yet your answer was so simple and painfully obvious to all except me of course. Here I am inserting the loose pins and then trying to work from underneath with limited clearances to expand the wings on the pins. OR, as you suggested, I could just bend the wings out first and then tap them in. [D)] Thank God for the forum! Hanging my head in shame…

Hey, the solder was a good tip. Especially since the new car is just a re-make of the original post-war, it won’t have any collector value.
