The local DCC guru and steam expert installed a TCS decoder and a Digitrax sound module in mt favorite Mogul.
The air pumps and hiss work regardless of the address set on my Zephyr but the loco will not respond to any commands. I presume that I have the wrong address but do not know how to find the correct one. I tried the engines number which is what this person uses most of the time.
Have you tried the first 2 and last 2 numbers of the loco’s number aswel Bruce?
I remember on one of my engines a while back i had the same problem, cant remember the reason now but i reprogramed it using a new address and away it went.
This is not to say theres not an easier way but i’d try reprograming it using 29 0r 97 and see what happens. Im not conversant with the Zephyr but it’l probebly except the long address of 297 aswel.
With my superchief, I just put it on the program track and read the address. Will not you system do that. When I had problem once, I took it to my LHS and he read the CV.
The bad news is that there can be other problems as well. I bought a used engine and it would only read the address part time and it turned out to be a bad decoder.
When the work, they are wonderful, when they don’t I remember how much easier DC was.
Try the default address of 03 and see what happens. If it isn’t that, then reprogram to whatever you want it to be. A 3-digit address would be regarded as a long address.
If all else fails, put it on the programming track (does a Zephyr have one of those?) and go through the procedure to reset the decoder to factory defaults. Then, it will be 03. If it works OK after that, try re-programming the address to 297.
I have a Digitrax Chief and sometimes my decoders do weird things. I just put them back on the programing track and re-program them. It is faster than trying to figure out wich CV is worng.
I was using my DT-400 throttle for this puprose (and a DT-100 before that), but recently connected an old Pentium III PC (Windows 98), Digitrax MS-100 and Decoder Pro to my layout. Decoder Pro can be down loaded for free and it makes programing decoders easy. Decoder pro saves the settings in the computer. I put the loco back on the programing track and instruct the computer to re-write all the decoder CVs.
Look at section 16.1 of your Zephyr manual about how to set up a programming track. Then look at section 16.6 regarding reading back CV values. The manul is available here if you don’t have yours handy:
Bruce, I have not talked with you in a while. Glad you’re doing well and got the digitrax xystem, I hear it is a good little system. I have the superchief. You say the system will read back CV settings. What does it show for the address. As mentioned before, I may would try reprogramming with a different address and see what happens, Jeff (Tweet)Kerr.
