How do you apply number boards on diesels ?

Hello fellow modelers,

I just started airbrushing my diesel engines, I’ ve aleardy did my priming. I’ ve already finished painting two dash 8’s & one gp38 high nose. After looking at my painted engines, I’ ve realized something was missing. numbers below or above my lights, Is there anyone who could help me with this minor issue.
How do you apply number boards on diesels ?
Thank you in advance !

There used to be a company that made small styrene numberboards. A search at Walthers came up with over 15 pages of stuff. Details West and Precision Scale had some. Theirs appear to be made of white metal with a post. Try the link below: type “numberboards” in the keywords field. Unfortunately, their website won’t allow you to copy and paste the results.

Do you need to add the number boards themselves, or do you just need to put numbers on existing boards?

I use “microscale” decals that come in a sheet…most LHS’s will handle just about every road made…be sure to use some decal softener after you put them on and spray on dull cote over the decal when you’re done…I usually cut them from the decal sheet with a sharp hobby knife or a pair of scissors and apply them with a hobby knife and a pair of modeling tweezers after soaking them in water for a couple of minutes …the decal will lift from the paper backing after a good soaking and then the decal is applied to the model…then i’ll put on the decal softener and when it’s dry, spray them with dull cote…here is my website to show you how…it’s in trains 1 and 2 with explanations to the lower right of the pictures…chuck http://community.webshots.com/photo/137793353/1321880395055249160nqNfFx

If you are talking about the numbers themselves there is a lttle prep work you need to do. There are two types of decals available. One has clear centers so they can be lit and one has the numbers in white on a black background or black on a white background. In all probabilty when you cut out the numbers and place them they aren’t going to fill up the frame (commonly called bugboards). You will need to paint the area the same color as the background in the decal. If you are going to use the ones that have clear numbers and you aren’t going to light them you now need to paint the center area the color you want the number. I always found that silver did a much better job than white. Don;t forget to add a coat of gloss after painting so the numbers adhere better.

Where would I get the numbers from ? the trains or diesels came with number boards. I would like to apply them, or do I just have to buy them separetly
