i usually just run it on my line alone for a while, and then add stuff to it little by little and work it in too regular use.
I just oil up the moving parts (wheel bearings, side rods, etc.), and run 'em! As the moving parts get “broken in”, performance usually increases. One note to newbies: ALWAYS prime smoke units before operating any locomotive with a smoke unit.
Lubricate, run forward about 10 min., run reverse about 10 min., and go.
