Hello,
I’m trying to get the sideframes off on my GP38-2, but I can’t figure out how. Also, I don’t want to risk breaking the frames. Any ideas?

Be very careful.[;)]
I think (don’t know for sure because I don’t have one handy at work) that those trucks are designed similar to Kato’s trucks. In order to get the sideframe off, you have to remove the bottom gear cover plate, which has tabs that lock the sideframes in place. In other words, Ted is correct…very carefully. [:)]

Seriously, use a small slotted screwdriver and gently pry the gear covers off from the extreme ends of the power truck assembly by using a slight twisting motion. I find it safer to remove the trucks from the frame in order to get to the tabs Arjay referred to from the top, but that requires an almost complete disassembly of your loco. Once you have it apart you’ll see how every part attaches to each other and you’ll never have a problem again.
