How do you rate the NWP?

See above

the what!!![(-D][(-D][swg][swg][#wstupid]

Unfortunately, the latest incarnation of NWP is probably kaput.

See the North Coast Railroad Authority’s website and the Northwestern Pacific Historical Society for more information about the latest NWP. There did used to be a railfan website for NWP that I went to regularly, however they must have got tired of waiting for the line to reopen.

I found this satellite photograph of NWP’s facilities in Eureka, CA.

I could not resist voting for “Anything in California is just plain wierd [sic]”.

Wasn’t sure what it was. Read the second post. and well i’m still not sure.

Voted for #2 and I’m a Native Californian, LOL! Of course we’re not where the weirdos COME from, we’re where they all MOVED TO! Now about the NWP–it’s a favorite here in Northern California, even if it looks as if it may end up as a trail through the Redwoods. But it’s had a nice, long history, and it runs (?) through some of the most beautiful countryside in the entire state, and I really hope that somehow, it can survive. And if you plan on modeling it, well all I can say is CHEERS TO YOU, FRIEND!!

Thanks for the link. It was very helpful.

The NWP is relatively little-known except to us wacky Left Coasters and inhabitants of the State of Jefferson. It was indeed a weird railroad, including electric interurban, narrow-gauge steam, and all sorts of oddball equipment. But that’s part of its charm, I think.

I didn’t really have time to poke around much of the railroad lines on my last trip to Humboldt County, although I did some trackwalking in Arcata and took a shot or two on the Samoa peninsula.

I have seen the NWPRRHS site before, and have seen other shots on that satellite-photos page (they have shots of some Sacramento Northern stuff, like the Woodland depot) but never took much of a look at the NWP shots–most instructive!

Sorry folks, this poll was meant to be viewed in the context of other posts of the last few days. By itself it is rather pointless.

I see that today’s newswire has something about NWP in it.

Outstanding! Maybe I should take the local city college’s Railroad Operations class, and then apply to work on the NWP when it reopens–what a perfect opportunity to move back up to Humboldt County!

The NWP as we knew it, was dead and buried long ago, despite all the recent hoopla and efforts put forth to restore it to service. The local citizens have mobilized every political tool available to thwart any resumption of operation. Furthermore, who would provide the millions of dollars necessary to restore the physical plant? And once restored will industry come or, as is too often the case, will these same political forces be at work to overregulate the now improved local economy. We have a better chance of capturing Osama bin laden and locating Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction before we see resumption of service through the eel river canyon to Eureka if the enviormentalist, developers and the Army Corp Of Engineers continue to hold sway with the folks in Sacramento and Washington .

I voted for “The What?”

The What?[:D]

The fabulous slapped-together regional mega-short-line built of six shorter short lines and a few even shorter lines, and a couple of narrower lines, and a couple of electric lines, that seldom traveled in a straight line, hauling lumber down out of the Northcoast until a landslide on the Eel River stopped the trains on perhaps a permanent basis. While there are problems to be overcome, such as resistance from environmentalists, less lumber coming down off the Northcoast, and the tendency for the mountains near the Eel River to collapse occasionally, it would certainly be nice if trains started coming down the mountain in that neck of the woods!

Never heard of it.

State of Jefferson? Are we talking For Want of a Nail by Robert Sobel? [:D]
