I have heard from different sources that UP is running some new trains, presumably these are to bypass congested yards.
Here are the new trains I have heard about.
QRVPX
MSTWC
MWCST
2QFRNP
QNPFR
Q - Quality (high priority manifest, if I remember correctly)
M - Manifest
FR - Fresno, CA.
NP - North Platte. NE.
PX - Phoenix, AZ
RV - Roseville, CA
ST - Stockton, CA
Presumably the 2QFRNP and QNPFR are for cars that travelling between the southern San Joaquin Valley and Nebraska and points east., thus bypassing classification at Roseville. It appears that the MSTWC and MWCST have cars for the Stockton and SF Bay areas. Presumably there is a train that goes between Oakland (or Warm Springs) and Stockton, probably over Altamont Pass. And, the QRVPX is probably to bypass classification at West Colton.
I also saw a remote control yard switcher with four guys riding on it. Presumably half of them are trainees.
One of the recent Train magazines said that the UPRR was going to do something like this. In fact they said the UPRR had already begun making up rack trains at Cheyenne instead of NP to ease congestion @ NP. [:o)][:p][:)]

“In fact the multiModal doctrine of point to point single-destination comes into play throughout the Unified Plan. The Sunset Route provides an example ; Once a manifet trains are built at Roseville or West Colton CA or Tuscon AZ, El Paso, Fort Worth, San Antonio or Houston, they are being run straight to the other end, without block swaps or other work in route, if possible. Sunset Route traffic for Northern California will run straight to Roseville near Sacramento, bypassing WEst Colton crowded hump in the LA basin. And to relieve Roseville, Bay Area is to be routed to Stockton CA which will build “hauler” trains for Oakland, Warm Springs & San Jose”. [:o)][:p][:)]
