How does a FRED/EOT attach to a coupler? Also, dimensions?

How exactly does a FRED/EOT device attach to a coupler?

Also, does anyone know where I can find exact dimensions of a FRED/EOT and a detailed diagram or closeup photos of a FRED/EOT by itself? I’ve only seen one attached to a coupler.

I’m thinking of scratchbuilding a dummy (non-flashing) FRED/EOT for my trains.

It attaches to the side of the coupler, the drawbar portion has two small holes cast into the side where a expandable claw goes into it

Modern ones clamp to the outside of coupler (not the knuckle) so that the car can be coupleed into without crushing the EOT.

Then an air hose is connected to the train line. On older EOT’s there is a battery that had to be replaced, on modern EOT’s there is an air operated dynamo that powers the EOT and charges the battery. The sizes vary by the era, make and model of the EOT. They are typically about 15-24" high, about 8-9 " wide and about 6-8" deep.

Why a dummy? Have you seen this offering from Ring Engineering?

I have one on one of my Amtrak MHCs and another on a Triple Crown train. NEAT!

They are pretty neat.
You can also buy the stardard trucks if you are concerned about them matching on the car.
